Traffic Lights at A2

The following reply was received to an enquiry by Dover District Councillor Mog Ovenden

Dear Councillor Ovenden

Thank you for your email to our Road Space team on 15 December 2017, which was passed to us to respond to on 17 December 2017

A-one+ works on behalf of Highways England and we are responsible for the day to day operation and maintenance of motorways and trunk roads in Kent, Sussex and a small section of Surrey.

I’m sorry to hear of the delays being caused as result of an issue with our traffic signals at Shepherdswell and Lydden.

As you may be aware, we’ve recently been carrying out resurfacing work on the A2 in the Shepherdswell and Lydden area to deliver improved journeys and safer conditions here. To complete this work, we needed to remove the timing loops, which regulate the flow of traffic through the signals, from the carriageway. This means that whilst these are not in the carriageway, the traffic signals have reverted to a default timing setting, rather than a dynamic setting prioritising different directions at different times depending on the amount of traffic.

On 14 December 2017, we received a request from Kent Police to suspend our operations on the A2 due to difficulty policing traffic in the area. Due to the immediate nature of this request, we were instructed to suspend work immediately and as such we’ve been unable to fully complete our work and the timing loops have not been re-instated. I can confirm that our works are due to resume on 23 January, at which point these timing loops will be fully reinstated and programmed in to run as they had before.

I can only apologise for the inconvenience that this has caused you and I ask for your patience until we can fully resolve this issue.

Thank you again for contacting us and for any other queries, please contact the Highways England Customer Contact Centre. They are available 24 hours a day by phone: 0300 123 5000 or by email: info@highwaysengland.co.uk. Alternatively, you can visit the Highways England website at www.highways.gov.uk.
